The village Tigri Taga on the banks of holy river Ganga hosts the annual Kartik Poornima Mela witnessed by almost 2 million villagers every year . Garh Mukteshwar was part of Teerthwal Taga (Kaushik Tyagi) area, which has a Sati Temple near Sanskrit Pathshala. The Teerthwal Tyagis were the owners of this tirth and therefore they were called Teerthwal having possession of Garh Mukteshwar, Tigri and 12 adjoining villages. .

Ganga River

The Ganga is one of the major holy rivers of the Indian subcontinent, flowing east through the Gangetic Plain of northern India into Bangladesh. The 2,510 km (1,560 mi) river rises in the western Himalayas in the Uttarakhand state of India and drains into the Sunderbans delta in the Bay of Bengal. It has long been considered a holy river by Hindus and worshiped as the goddess Ganga in Hinduism .

Garhmukteshwar is like mini Banaras, situated on the National Highway 24 joining New Delhi to Lucknow.

The town is 5 kilometres from the Ganga River and around 100 kilometres from New Delhi, making it the closest major place of habitation to that river from India's capital city. Garhmukteshwar is a taluk headquarter town located in Ghaziabad district, near the National Highway 24 leading to Delhi. The name of the place is derived from the great temple of Mukteshwar Mahadeva, dedicated to the goddess Ganga who is worshipped here in four Temples, two located on a high cliff and two below it.

There is a well in the temple close to the Meerut road and the water is here is considered extremely holy. Near it are eighty sati pillars, marking the spots where Hindu widows are said to have become sati. Another landmark in the town is a mosque built by Ghayas-ud-din Balban, bearing an inscription in Arabic with the date 682 Hijri (AD 1283).
The ancient name was Shiv Ballabhpur. Here a very large fair happens on Kartik Purnmasi in winter (November ) aka Ganga Snan Mela. After the war of Mahabharat the Pandava built a Shiva temple and performed puja here.
